The Multifunctional Administrative City Construction Agency announced that Chungnam National University's College of Medicine will officially move into the Sejong Shared Campus in Jiphyeon-dong, Sejong City, starting June 3.
This marks the final tenant for the lease-based campus, following Seoul National University, KDI School of Public Policy and Management, Hanbat National University, and Chungbuk National University, which began operations in September 2024. The move successfully concludes Phase 1 of the Sejong Shared Campus development project.
The Sejong Shared Campus is Korea's first lease-based shared campus, built on a 600,000-square-meter site in the 4-2 residential zone of Jiphyeon-dong with a total investment of 280 billion won. The facility was developed to enable shared use of facilities among multiple universities and promote convergence education.
Chungnam National University's medical school will operate with approximately 330 students, including pre-medical courses. The university plans to offer 20 to 30 courses per semester at the Sejong campus, where students will build foundational competencies as future medical professionals using specialized educational facilities.
With the addition of the medical school, the Sejong Shared Campus now hosts diverse fields including medicine from Chungnam National University, veterinary medicine from Chungbuk National University, policy studies from Seoul National University and KDI, and information technology from Hanbat National University. This consolidation strengthens the campus's foundation as a higher education platform.
The medical school's arrival is expected to establish a foundation for training specialized medical professionals in the region, contributing to improved healthcare services and essential medical workforce development in Sejong City.
The Construction Agency plans to develop the shared campus into a hub for innovative higher education by supporting joint curriculum development and convergence research among universities. The agency will also promote collaboration between research capabilities at Chungnam and Chungbuk National Universities and advanced biotechnology companies in Sejong Tech Valley, positioning Sejong as a base for the bio-healthcare industry.
The agency is also working with universities and related organizations to create a stable academic environment for students. Plans include supporting dormitory operations, continuously reviewing public transportation routes for student convenience, and gradually expanding amenities to minimize inconveniences on campus.
"The arrival of Chungnam National University's medical school marks an important turning point for Sejong City as it advances toward becoming a self-sufficient, innovative city of the future," said Ahn Seok-hwan, Director of Urban Planning at the Construction Agency. "We will continue our support so that talented medical students can pursue their dreams in Sejong and ultimately contribute to improving regional healthcare services."
