Busan's Haeundae District is strengthening support for elderly drivers who voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses to prevent traffic accidents. With combined district and city subsidies reaching up to 400,000 won, wider participation is expected.
Haeundae District announced on the 3rd that it is implementing a voluntary license surrender support program for drivers aged 75 and older.
Residents aged 75 and above who are registered in the district and voluntarily surrender their driver's licenses will receive 100,000 won in cash per person. Payments will be deposited into accounts under the applicant's name.
Applicants may also apply for the city's support program simultaneously. Busan Metropolitan City provides 300,000 won in Dongbaekjeon local currency to drivers aged 70 and older who surrender their licenses and verify actual driving history with documents such as auto insurance certificates or vehicle registration. Those unable to provide verification receive 100,000 won. Consequently, eligible applicants can receive up to 400,000 won in combined support.
Applications can be submitted in person or by an authorized family member at the administrative welfare center in the applicant's residential district. Detailed documentation requirements and procedures are available from the district's Transportation Administration Division.
A district official said, "Traffic accidents caused by drivers aged 65 and older are on the rise," adding, "We urge elderly drivers to actively participate in license surrender for the safety of both pedestrians and drivers."
