JANGSEONG, South Jeolla Province — So Young-ho, a leading Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Jangseong County chief, drew more than 3,000 residents to his book launch event at the Jangseong Culture and Arts Center on May 2, ahead of the June 3 local elections.
The event for his book "Painting My Hometown Jangseong" showcased So's political philosophy of "Only Jangseong," reflecting his 26 years of public service experience and vision for the county's future.
So, who gave up a secure government position to return to his hometown, struck a chord with attendees as he shared his deliberations and determination to enter politics for Jangseong's development.
Breaking from typical political events that emphasize officials' achievements, the launch minimized formal protocols and put residents at center stage. Ordinary citizens including returning farmers, young people, agricultural workers, and multicultural families took the podium to share their own stories and experiences.
"This book is not a finished conclusion but a proposal to create something together with residents," So said. "Loving one's hometown is not about possession but responsibility, and I will continue to stand with this community."
Former colleagues from So's previous postings in Sinan County, Goheung County, and Yeosu City attended the event, reuniting after years apart.
So was born in Seosam-myeon, Jangseong, and graduated from Jangseong Middle School and Jangseong High School. He entered public service at the South Jeolla Provincial Office after passing the 5th Local Higher Civil Service Examination in 1999.
He held key positions including first chief of staff to South Jeolla Governor Kim Young-rok, policy planning officer, deputy county chief of Goheung, deputy mayor of Mokpo, and director-general of agricultural and strategic industries for South Jeolla Province.
So currently serves as vice chairman of the Democratic Party's National Farmers and Fishermen Committee, vice chairman of the party's Jangseong chapter, and head of the Kim Dae-jung Foundation's Jangseong branch.
