Gyeonggi Province will invest 284.2 billion won ($197 million) in provincial and local road projects this year, aiming to ease chronic traffic congestion and reduce travel times across the region.
The provincial government announced on the 2nd that it plans to complete five road sections scheduled for opening while breaking ground on five new sections to deliver tangible transportation improvements for residents.
Five sections are slated for completion this year. These include the Namyangju Wabu-Hwado section (4.3 km), which opened in January, along with National Local Road 98 sections in Gwangju connecting Docheok-Silchon (3.42 km) and Silchon-Manseon (3.86 km), Provincial Road 321's Anseong Gongdo-Yangseong section (3.3 km), and Provincial Road 371's Yeoncheon Duil-Seokjang section (1.79 km).
The two Gwangju sections will connect the Gonjiam and Docheok areas to National Route 3. Officials expect the projects to resolve chronic congestion and strengthen connectivity along the southeastern metropolitan industrial belt linking Yongin, Gwangju, and Yeoju.
The Anseong Gongdo-Yangseong section involves widening the narrow Provincial Road 318, which is expected to improve access to Gosam Lake and boost tourism.
The Yeoncheon Duil-Seokjang section will enhance pedestrian safety through road realignment and sidewalk installation while improving regional logistics efficiency in connection with the Jeokseong-Duil section completed last year.
Five new sections totaling 22.59 km will break ground this year: Yangpyeong Yanggeun Bridge, Icheon-Yeoju Baeksa-Heungcheon, Yeoju Cheori-Uman, Anseong Iljuk-Icheon Daepo (2), and Paju Wollong-Gwangtan. These projects are expected to reduce inter-regional travel times and expand living zones.
Design work will begin on two additional sections spanning 5.27 km—Paju Bangchuk-Biam and Anseong Gongdo-Yangseong (2)—to lay the foundation for medium- to long-term road network expansion.
The province also plans to expand its joint road-power grid construction agreement signed with Korea Electric Power Corporation on January 22. Discussions with relevant agencies are underway regarding infrastructure issues related to the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex.
"We will deliver early results on completion projects and push forward with new construction and joint projects so that residents can feel the changes in their daily lives," said Kim Dae-soon, Second Vice Governor for Administration. "We will contribute to balanced regional development and strengthening industrial competitiveness through comprehensive road network expansion."
