The Daegu Metropolitan Government on Monday called for the passage of a special law to integrate the administrative functions of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, saying the merger "must be achieved for the region's next 100 years."
"We deeply regret that the special law for Daegu-North Gyeongsang administrative integration failed to pass during the National Assembly's extraordinary session on December 1," the city said in a statement.
The city noted that "the deadline for passing the integration law is extremely tight, considering the June 3 local election schedule and the preparation procedures required for the launch by July 1."
"As administrative integration is a project for Korea's balanced growth and future prosperity, we earnestly request that the ruling and opposition parties reach an agreement swiftly so the special law can pass the National Assembly," the statement said.
