Kim Dong-yeon: "Semiconductor cluster transportation infrastructure to be advanced more quickly"

YONGIN — Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon pledged on Sunday to accelerate transportation infrastructure development to ensure the timely completion of the Yongin semiconductor cluster.

"We will push forward with transportation infrastructure faster than originally planned so that the national industrial complex and Yongin semiconductor cluster can be built without delay," Kim said during a site visit to provincial roads near the Yongin Advanced System Semiconductor National Industrial Complex in Seo-ri, Idong-eup. "Gyeonggi Province will take full responsibility for design and construction."

The governor explained the province's infrastructure expansion efforts to Samsung Electronics DS Division President Kim Yong-kwan and SK hynix Vice President Park Ho-hyun, who accompanied him on the visit.

Kim announced that plans have been finalized to expand Provincial Road 45 from four to eight lanes, and to widen Provincial Roads 82 and 3201 to four lanes each. For the Road 82 expansion, the province agreed with the central government to contribute 79 billion won ($54 million) and secure additional funding to participate as the implementing authority, with Gyeonggi handling design and construction.

Design work is also underway for a 3-kilometer provincial road expansion from the Route 320 entrance to Sangeo-ri and a 4.9-kilometer section connecting to the semiconductor industrial complex, with compensation and construction set to begin next year.

"Traffic issues for the general industrial complex have been largely resolved, and we will ensure planned national road expansions and infrastructure development for the national industrial complex proceed without disruption," Kim said.

The governor reaffirmed his opposition to recent discussions about relocating the national semiconductor complex to other regions.

"Such discussions could cause significant confusion for the materials, parts and equipment suppliers and subcontractor ecosystem built over nearly 40 years, as well as for foreign investment companies," Kim said. "This must proceed without wavering for the sake of national competitiveness."

Kim noted that as governor he has attracted approximately 100 trillion won in investment, with about 35 trillion won from foreign sources.

"Gyeonggi Province will provide responsible support to ensure overseas companies that have already invested or are considering additional investment based on the Yongin semiconductor cluster are not shaken," he said.

"We will work with the central government and municipal authorities to comprehensively develop infrastructure including transportation, electricity and water supply, as well as living conditions," Kim added. "We will spare no administrative support to ensure the semiconductor cluster is completed without setbacks."
