The industrial city of Gumi in North Gyeongsang Province is launching a full-scale initiative to create an artificial intelligence transformation (AX) hub by integrating data infrastructure and AI with its solid manufacturing base in electronics, defense, and robotics. The city will also establish the "Gumi-style Manufacturing AX Alliance," encompassing industry, academia, research institutions, and government, as a control tower to discover and demonstrate related projects and expand them across the industrial complex.
On the 26th, Gumi City announced it would concentrate its capabilities on the vision of "Global Manufacturing AI Data City Gumi: Leaping Forward as a Global Hub for Breakthrough Manufacturing Innovation" for the AX hub initiative. This reflects the city's commitment to seize the golden time for manufacturing AX and lead the AI-centered industrial transformation.
Specific targets set for 2032 include nurturing 10 AX transformation anchor companies and 100 AI upstream and downstream companies, as well as training 1,000 AI practitioners. The city also presented 26 detailed strategic tasks across four major sectors to achieve these goals.
For AI infrastructure, the city will establish a "Manufacturing Innovation AI Cluster" where AI companies, research institutions, and manufacturers collaborate, along with a "Hyper AI Data Cluster" providing high-performance computing resources specialized for manufacturing. The plan aims to create an integrated innovation base supporting the entire process from R&D to demonstration and commercialization while implementing an intelligent manufacturing platform.
The core of intelligent manufacturing transformation is creating a national-level "Manufacturing AX Demonstration Complex." The entire Gumi National Industrial Complex will be transformed into a demonstration space for manufacturing AI technology. By building a foundation model optimized for data in key industries such as electronics, defense, and semiconductors, AI will be applied on-site to drive productivity innovation.
Additionally, the city will expand the data ecosystem by establishing a "Manufacturing AI Data Space" and an "Industrial AI Data Processing Support Platform" to enable safe sharing and utilization of corporate data. Plans also include creating a "Manufacturing AX Scale-up Field" where companies can directly verify AI in production settings and an "AI Next Leader Campus" where industry, academia, and research institutions collaborate to cultivate practical talent.
On the 25th, Gumi City held an "AI Vision Declaration Ceremony" at Gumico with about 100 attendees including business leaders, corporate executives and employees, and citizens, unveiling this blueprint. The "Manufacturing AX Alliance" launched that day brought together 16 organizations including Gumi City, AI and data-related companies, universities and research institutions, and economic organizations.
Gumi Mayor Kim Jang-ho stated, "By implanting the brain of AI into Gumi's world-class manufacturing infrastructure, we will definitely create Korea's leading manufacturing AI city where companies can best challenge themselves and grow."
