Former Yeongam County Governor Jeon Dong-pyeong has taken his first step toward becoming the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for county governor in the June 3 local elections.
Jeon announced on the 9th that he completed his official candidate application with the Democratic Party's South Jeolla Provincial Chapter and will begin his campaign activities in earnest.
Jeon was previously classified as subject to the party's detailed screening process, but this was solely due to incomplete submission of family-related documents. His preliminary candidate qualification review is expected to pass without issue.
During his tenure as Yeongam County Governor in the 6th and 7th popularly elected terms, Jeon achieved an SA rating—the highest grade nationwide—for campaign pledge fulfillment. He also received recognition for overall policy excellence, including the Grand Prize in the Korea Happiness Index evaluation for two consecutive years, the Korea Local Government Management Award, and the Top CEO Award.
His decision to provide secondary emergency relief funds—a first in South Jeolla Province during his tenure—is reportedly receiving positive evaluations from local voters.
Building on these achievements, Jeon has maintained the top position in consecutive approval rating polls for Yeongam County Governor candidates conducted by local media outlets.
