Rain and snow will fall intermittently across central regions of South Korea on Monday, January 29, with skies clearing from nighttime in central areas and North Gyeongsang Province.
Rain and snow that began in northeastern Gyeonggi Province, inland and mountainous Gangwon Province, and South Chungcheong Province expanded to Seoul and other central regions by early morning. Precipitation spread to western and northeastern inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province and North Jeolla Province in the morning before tapering off in the afternoon. Light rain of less than 0.1mm may fall in parts of the southern coast of South Gyeongsang Province, Jeju Island, northern South Jeolla Province, and western inland South Gyeongsang Province.
Total rainfall over the two days from January 28-29 is forecast at around 5mm for northeastern Gyeonggi Province, inland and mountainous Gangwon Province, and the Daejeon-Sejong-South Chungcheong area. Monday's precipitation is expected to reach approximately 5mm in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, the West Sea islands, and North Chungcheong Province, with less than 5mm in North Jeolla Province and around 1mm in western and northeastern inland North Gyeongsang Province and Ulleungdo and Dokdo islands.
Expected snowfall over the two days includes 3-8cm in Gangwon mountainous areas, 2-7cm in northern inland Gangwon, and 1-5cm in central and southern inland Gangwon. Northeastern Gyeonggi Province may see around 1cm of snow accumulation on Monday. Commuters should exercise extra caution due to icy roads and black ice in areas receiving rain or snow.
Morning lows will range from -2°C to 7°C, with afternoon highs of 5°C to 14°C, warmer than seasonal averages. Seoul's daytime temperature will rise to 8°C as the bitter cold moderates.
Fine dust concentrations will reach "unhealthy" levels in the Seoul metropolitan area, western Gangwon Province, Chungcheong region, Gwangju, North Jeolla Province, and Daegu due to inflows of particulate matter from abroad. Air quality will deteriorate in eastern Gangwon Province and South Jeolla and North Gyeongsang provinces from late afternoon, and in Busan, Ulsan, South Gyeongsang Province, and Jeju Island from nighttime.
Wave heights in coastal waters of the East Sea, West Sea, and South Sea will range from 0.5-1.5m. Offshore waters approximately 200km from the coastline will see waves of 1.0-3.5m in the East Sea and 0.5-2.0m in the West and South seas.
