Korea Railroad Corporation (Korail) held a nationwide video conference with regional directors on Thursday to prepare for the full-scale strike announced by the Korean Railway Workers' Union scheduled for Monday.
Acting Korail CEO Jeong Jeong-rae and senior executives including regional headquarters directors and rolling stock maintenance chiefs attended the meeting to discuss emergency transportation measures and safety management plans.
With approximately 250 trains expected to be suspended daily during the strike, Korail implemented preemptive measures starting Thursday afternoon, including restricting ticket sales for trains that may be canceled between December 23 and 29. The railway operator expects to maintain about 70% of normal service levels during the strike.
Korail will also send text messages to passengers who have booked potentially affected trains three times starting Thursday, advising them to confirm train operations before departure.
If the strike is prolonged, it could disrupt the planned expansion of KTX services on the Jungang and Donghae lines scheduled for December 30, as well as additional holiday trains for Christmas and New Year.
Korail said it would consider the impact of train service adjustments on regional economies during the year-end holiday season and prioritize safety in its emergency transportation operations.
