A Vietnamese student in her 20s who allegedly abandoned her newborn in a paper bag shortly after giving birth, and a friend who assisted with the delivery, are facing arrest warrants in Seoul.
Both women are reportedly language course students at Dongguk University.
The Seoul Central District Court will hold a warrant hearing for suspect A, the mother, and suspect B, a fellow Vietnamese national who helped with the birth, at 3 p.m. Thursday.
A is accused of abandoning the infant around 6:30 p.m. on January 14 in a building near Dongguk University in Jung-gu, Seoul. She faces charges of child abuse resulting in death under the Child Abuse Punishment Act. B is accused of participating in the alleged crime by assisting with the delivery at the scene.
Police responded to a report that "a newborn had been abandoned in a paper bag," but the infant was pronounced dead. Authorities are conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
Police applied for arrest warrants for both suspects on January 15 after investigating the circumstances and motive behind the incident.
