An analysis has confirmed that a driver in his 70s misapplied the pedals in an accident where a vehicle plowed onto a sidewalk in Incheon, leaving a mother and daughter in critical condition.
The Incheon Bupyeong Police Station announced Wednesday that an analysis of the vehicle's event data recorder (EDR), conducted by the Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency, confirmed that driver A had pressed the accelerator pedal just before the accident.
The investigation found that A's vehicle had the accelerator pedal depressed instead of the brake at the time of the accident, and the rear brake lights did not illuminate. A reportedly told police during questioning, "I think I made a (driving) mistake."
A is accused of injuring a woman in her 30s, identified as B, and her two-year-old daughter while driving out of a public parking lot in Sipjeong-dong, Bupyeong-gu, Incheon, at approximately 12:23 p.m. on December 18.
At the time, A's vehicle had stopped next to a payment kiosk at the parking lot exit before suddenly crashing through the barrier and plowing onto the sidewalk, striking B and her daughter as they walked. B has not yet regained consciousness, and her daughter was also seriously injured.
"No vehicle defects were found," a police official said.
