Women's flatulence contains higher concentrations of odor-causing compounds than men's, according to research by a prominent gastroenterologist. Some experts now suggest these same compounds may offer unexpected health benefits.
Dr. Michael Levitt, an American gastroenterologist known as the "King of Farts," recently discussed his 1998 flatulence odor experiment with the New York Post, revealing that "women's farts contain higher concentrations of hydrogen sulfide than men's."
For the study, Dr. Levitt recruited 16 adults with no history of gastrointestinal disorders and equipped them with "flatulence collection devices" consisting of rectal tubes and gas pouches. Participants were given pinto beans and laxatives to stimulate gas production for collection.
Analysis revealed that the primary cause of flatulence odor was sulfur compounds, particularly hydrogen sulfide—the chemical responsible for the smell of rotten eggs.
While men produced greater volumes of gas overall, women's flatulence contained "significantly higher concentrations" of hydrogen sulfide, the study found.
Building on this research, some scientists have recently suggested that the hydrogen sulfide detected in women's flatulence may actually provide health benefits, the outlet reported. Although hydrogen sulfide is highly toxic at high concentrations, small amounts may help protect brain cells from age-related damage.
Hydrogen sulfide is known to chemically modify proteins and facilitate signal transmission between nerve cells. This function deteriorates with age and in Alzheimer's patients, leading researchers to suggest that hydrogen sulfide may help maintain brain function.
In 2021, researchers at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine injected a hydrogen sulfide-carrying compound called NaGYY into laboratory mice with Alzheimer's genes over 12 weeks. The treated mice showed approximately 50 percent improvement in cognitive function and motor ability compared to untreated mice. Their ability to remember platform escape locations also improved, and their activity levels increased.
However, whether the same effects occur in humans remains unclear. "We confirmed that some Alzheimer's-related behavioral symptoms may be improved with hydrogen sulfide," the researchers said, emphasizing the need for further study.
