“Suicide, Empty Chair, and Cardigan” by Lee Jin-hwan, director of Doo Dream's Department of Mental Health, which depicts the process of treating patients on the verge of life and death due to depression, was honored with the 21st Boryeong (003850) Doctor's Essay Literature Award.
Boryeong announced on the 3rd that an award ceremony was held at the Jungbo Hall at its headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul the day before. After judging works that received a competition for 2 months from July at the Korea Essay Literature Promotion Association, a total of 9 works were selected as winners, including 1 Grand Prize, 1 Gold Award, 2 Silver Awards, and 5 Bronze Awards.
“Suicide, Empty Chair, and Cardigan,” which received the grand prize, conveys the value of life dignity through the patient treatment process. It was well received for its detailed depiction of a patient's inner breakdown and recovery, and for delicately depicting how medicine can be a spiritual foundation that supports life beyond simple treatment.
The Gold Award was won by Cho Young-joon, director of Chusae-ro Hospital, who drew his struggle at the site of the Itaewon disaster, for 'On the Border between Silence and Asura'. Eun-sang highlighted the role and attitude of medical personnel for “The Man with Flowers,” a specialist at Sun-natural Gentle Mental Health Clinic, and “Why did you save me?” by Park Min, a specialist at Yuseong-sun Hospital Each was selected. The statue was awarded by △ Hand of Salvation (Kim Bo-gyu, Asan Hospital, Seoul), Silent Hope (Hanaro Medical Foundation Kim Ha-yeon), At the End of Winter (Bae Cheol-sung, Pohang Women's Hospital), Clue of Salvation (Choi Se-hoon, Asan Hospital, Seoul), and Morning Family (Seo Jeong-guk, Chung-Ang University Hospital).
The Boryeong Doctor's Essay and Literature Award, established in 2005, has widely publicized the meaning of respect for life and love by vividly depicting the medical scene with the doctors' warm words. Medical professionals played a role as essayists and produced 178 winners over 21 years.
