Kim Kun-hee's special inspection team (Special Prosecutor Min Jung-gi) has blitzingly prosecuted Mayor Oh Se-hoon, who is suspected of receiving a free public opinion survey from 'political broker' Myung Tae-kyun.
The special prosecutor's team revealed on the 1st that they have unrestrained the charges against Mayor Oh for violating the Political Funds Act. Kang Cheol-won, the former mayor of the Ministry of Government of Seoul, and businessman Kim Han-jung were brought to trial on the same charges.
As a result of the investigation by the special inspection team, it was revealed that Mayor Oh asked Mr. Myung to conduct a public opinion survey on the Seoul mayoral election before the Seoul mayoral election in April 2021. It was also investigated that former Vice Mayor Kang, the general secretary of the election camp at the time, was instructed to conduct a public opinion survey in consultation with Mr. Myung. The special prosecutor believes that Kim was also requested to support the costs required for the public opinion survey.
As a result, it was investigated that Mr. Myung conducted a total of 10 public or unpublished public opinion polls on the Seoul mayoral election from January 22 to February 28, 2021 at the request of Mayor Oh. The special inspection team suspects that former Vice Mayor Kang contacted Mr. Myung to discuss the conduct of public opinion polls, such as exchanging questionnaires. Kim is accused of violating the Political Funds Act by paying 33 million won in the name of public opinion polls over a total of 5 sessions from February 2021 to March 26 of the same year.
Former Vice Mayor Kang and Kim were summoned to the special inspection team on the 25th of last month for investigation. Former Vice Mayor Kang met with reporters prior to the investigation and said, “I have never requested (a public opinion survey).” Kim also denied that “(the cost of the poll) loan itself doesn't make sense.”
