Han Byeong-do, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said he "will create a working National Assembly starting this week."
Han made the remarks at a general meeting of party lawmakers held at the National Assembly on the 20th. "Today we opened the first meeting of the National Assembly Steering Committee and elected a secretary, and we will proceed with revising the law to tighten filibuster requirements and shorten the fast-track process," he said.
He also stressed that the National Assembly's 11 standing committees should be activated first, regardless of the People Power Party, which is currently boycotting the standing committees in protest over the parliamentary organization. "I ask that the Democratic Party's standing committees, which have chairs, immediately move to process livelihood bills," Han said. "For standing committees without chairs, I ask that related briefings proceed."
Targeting the People Power Party, which is opposing the bill to extend the comprehensive special counsel, he directly criticized, "They say they will conduct a bogus filibuster again today." He said, "With national suspicions piled high, we cannot halt the special counsel citing time. Our role is clear. It is to root out the tragedy of insurrection so that it never happens again on this land."
He continued, "Establishing the substantive truth of the insurrection is not a matter of ruling and opposition parties, nor a matter of progressives and conservatives, but a matter of common sense. And yet I cannot understand at all why the People Power Party is protesting so much and resisting so fiercely."
