Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon directly criticized the ruling party's push to abolish the prosecution's supplementary investigation powers, saying, "The Democratic Party, which raged about the prosecution's 'fabricated indictment' using Lee Hwa-young's 'salmon liquor party' lie as a pretext, stays silent on the police's 'real fabrication.'"
In a Facebook post on Monday, Han cited allegations of evidence destruction by police that emerged in connection with the murder of a high school girl in Gwangju (the Jang Yoon-gi case). He argued, "Without the prosecution's supplementary investigation, the destruction of evidence carried out by the culprit's father, an active-duty police officer, and his friend, a senior police official, would have been buried forever."
He particularly pointed out, "The Jang Yoon-gi case starkly shows that if only the police can conduct investigations, countless wronged victims could emerge." He added, "Yet the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party, preoccupied only with the party convention, are determined to eliminate even the supplementary investigation powers."
He went on, "Usually people mend the barn after losing the cattle, but the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party instead want to tear down the barn even more thoroughly after losing the cattle." He struck directly, saying, "If they act this way even after seeing the Jang Yoon-gi case, they have declared that they don't care even if the country becomes one where, no matter how many 'Jang Yoon-gi cases' occur in Korea going forward, no one will ever know how the police buried or covered up the case."
He then said, "The social safety that Korea has built up over a long time is on the verge of collapsing entirely." He added, "So I ask the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party, for whom 'winning the party convention is all that matters' and who don't care what happens to the lives of ordinary citizens afterward. Are you truly going to side with the murderer?"
