Jung Chung-rae, a former leader of the Democratic Party and a candidate for the party's leadership, pledged Sunday to complete prosecution reform alongside Rep. Kim Yong-min, who announced his withdrawal from the party leadership race, reaffirming his commitment to fully abolishing supplementary investigation powers.
In a post on social media that day, Jung called Kim's withdrawal announcement "a decision made in deep anguish." He wrote, "I will join hands with Rep. Kim Yong-min and complete prosecution reform as Rep. Kim envisions it. Full abolition of supplementary investigation powers."
Earlier, Kim, who had been considering running for party leader, announced his withdrawal from the national convention, saying, "I wanted to make the Democratic Party a strong reform force, but I will focus on the more urgent task of prosecution reform." He stressed that the principle of separating investigation and prosecution must be seen through to the end, saying, "I will concentrate my capabilities on prosecution reform, which is a political calling and a task of our era."
Rep. Han Min-soo, a member of the pro-Jung Chung-rae faction, also expressed agreement through social media, saying, "Rep. Kim announced his withdrawal from the party leadership race to focus on prosecution reform." He added, "I will surely complete prosecution reform. Full abolition of supplementary investigation powers."
