Han Byung-do, acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said Monday that the party will expand its task force (TF) supporting three major mega-projects into a special committee and establish a party-government support system overseeing legislation, budget, and regulatory innovation.
"The Democratic Party will further strengthen its mega-project support system to match the government's pace of implementation," Han said at a Supreme Council meeting that day.
Sharing the results of the high-level party-government consultation held the previous day, Han explained, "The party and government agreed to swiftly build core infrastructure such as power, water, sites, and permits centered on semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, and physical AI, and to push related legislation and budget with a sense of speed." He added, "Despite dramatic overseas offers to attract them, our companies made the decision to invest domestically in consideration of national competitiveness," and pledged, "We will pursue follow-up legislation, including the Mega Special Zone Act, without setbacks."
By contrast, he sharply criticized the People Power Party, which has been rejecting parliamentary schedules in protest of the National Assembly's committee composition. "The People Power Party is driving corporate investment decisions and national growth strategies toward parliamentary investigations and special counsel probes, mobilizing longstanding regional sentiment to use as a tool for political strife," Han said. "Stop the sulking that holds people's lives and future hostage, and cooperate on normalizing the National Assembly as soon as possible."
In addition, the Democratic Party confirmed its policy to submit a special counsel bill this week regarding the ballot shortage that occurred during the last general election. "By introducing a special counsel, we will uncover the substantive truth and hold the National Election Commission fully accountable for its structural internal corruption," Han said.
Turning to the People Power Party, he stressed, "In this situation, insisting on recommendation by the opposition alone is nothing more than an argument for political strife rather than fact-finding," adding, "To exclude all political considerations in this special counsel, the third-party recommendation method is more realistic and fair."
Meanwhile, the Democratic Party said it will take strong legal action at the central party level under a zero-tolerance principle regarding the distribution of synthetic pornography and sexual insults recently committed against Rep. Lee Eon-ju. "This is a grave crime that annihilates a person's dignity and a clear act of character terrorism," acting leader Han said, strongly demanding an immediate and rigorous investigation by prosecuting authorities.
