Former Prime Minister Kim Min-seok will declare his candidacy for the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea on Friday in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, as well as in Gwanghwamun, Seoul.
Kim's camp said Thursday that "the former prime minister will pay tribute at the May 18th National Cemetery in Gwangju on Friday, then declare his candidacy for party leader at Gwangju Military Airport."
Kim's choice of Gwangju Military Airport, considered a site for the Gwangju semiconductor cluster, as the location for his candidacy declaration is interpreted as an effort to emphasize the "one team spirit" with President Lee Jae-myung, who personally announced the mega project. Rep. Jung Jin-wook explained that "it signifies the former prime minister's intention to take the lead in supporting the Gwangju semiconductor cluster, a core task of the Lee Jae-myung administration."
Some Democratic Party lawmakers from the Gwangju and South Jeolla region who support Kim are also expected to attend the candidacy declaration ceremony.
In addition, Kim will travel from Gwangju to Gwanghwamun in Seoul, where he will make one more candidacy declaration.
