The Army announced Monday that a man in his 20s who died during mobilization reserve training at a division in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, passed away due to pancreatitis he had been treated for before the training.
Choi Jang-sik, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army (Lieutenant General), held a briefing on the reservist's death at the Ministry of National Defense in Yongsan, Seoul, that day. "As a result of an autopsy conducted in the presence of the bereaved family, the cause of death was determined to be pancreatitis, for which he had been receiving treatment prior to entering the training," he said.
Earlier, on May 13, a man in his 20s identified as A, who was participating in mobilization reserve training held at the 73rd Division reserve training ground in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province, lost consciousness and collapsed while moving to a nighttime training location after dinner. At the time, suspicions were raised that A's death may have been caused by harsh training. In connection with this, President Lee Jae-myung ordered a thorough investigation into the facts and disciplinary action against those responsible.
