Ruling bloc parties have called for active government mediation to rescue Homeplus. The demand stems from the view that government-level resolution efforts are needed, as Meritz Financial Group, the largest creditor, and MBK Partners, the largest shareholder, continue to trade blame.
Ruling bloc parties, including the Democratic Party and the Progressive Party, made the demand Monday during a preparatory meeting at the National Assembly to establish a social dialogue body for Homeplus's rehabilitation. Rep. Min Byoung-dug expressed concern, saying, "If Homeplus enters the path of liquidation due to the irresponsible attitude of the major shareholder and creditors, 100,000 families will be driven to the brink."
Voices calling for the injection of public funds also emerged. Rep. Jung Hye-kyung of the Progressive Party said, "If the government hesitates, workers and local communities will bear the damage," adding, "We urge the government to inject public funds."
On the same day, they also requested accounting data from MBK Partners and Meritz Group to assess the situation. This week, they plan to demand a meeting with the chairman of Meritz Group, as well as visit the court, the prosecution, and the Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) to address the issue. Currently, the deadline for approval of Homeplus's rehabilitation plan is July 3.
