Lee Ho-sun, chairman of the People Power Party's party affairs audit committee, filed an appeal with the Seoul Metropolitan Election Commission on Friday, claiming the Seoul mayoral election was invalid. In the Seoul mayoral race, PPP candidate Oh Se-hoon was elected mayor.
Lee announced through his social media that day that he had filed an appeal with the Seoul election commission claiming the mayoral election was invalid. In the appeal, Lee wrote that "a shortage of ballots was intensively confirmed at 33 polling stations in Seoul (including 14 in Songpa-gu)," adding that "ballots were printed assuming a 50% turnout, but there is no legal basis for this." He continued, "Although the required number of ballots could have been sufficiently predicted, they were supplied in insufficient quantities, causing voting to be suspended and delayed at numerous polling stations." He said, "The resulting close of polling, exit poll reporting, voting allowed until 10:00 p.m. while ballot counting was underway in other areas, and the movement of ballot boxes to the counting venue without observers go beyond simple error — they are the result of a serious violation of the election management agency's inherent duties."
Under the Public Official Election Act, an election appeal can be filed within two weeks of the election day. If the election commission accepts the appeal within 60 days, a re-election can be held within 30 days. Lee's position is that this is a matter he is pursuing at a personal level, regardless of his party position.
