A law supporting local governments affected by the relocation of US Forces Korea bases to cities including Pyeongtaek was promulgated Tuesday in its extended form, the Ministry of National Defense said.
According to the ministry, a partial amendment to the Special Act on Support for Pyeongtaek and Other Areas Following the Relocation of US Forces Korea Bases (abbreviated as the US Base Relocation Pyeongtaek Support Act) passed a plenary session of the National Assembly on Nov. 7. It went through a Cabinet meeting on the 2nd of this month before being promulgated the same day.
Through this amendment, the US Base Relocation Pyeongtaek Support Act, originally set to sunset at the end of this year, had its effect extended by four years to the end of 2030.
The US Base Relocation Pyeongtaek Support Act is a temporary law established to support the Pyeongtaek region during the relocation of US Forces Korea bases. Since its enactment in 2004, its effect has been extended three times.
The ministry said the extension would give momentum to the remaining Yongsan Relocation Plan (YRP), describing it as "an important bridgehead for bringing the US Forces Korea base relocation project to a successful conclusion."
