Reformist lawmakers of the People Power Party (PPP) on Tuesday defined the results of the June 3 local elections as a crushing defeat and directly raised the issue of accountability for the leadership of Chang Dong-hyuk.
Alternative and Future, a group of PPP reformist lawmakers centered on first- and second-term members, held a debate at the National Assembly that day analyzing the local election results and made these remarks. Lawmakers Kim Jae-sup, Woo Jae-jun and Jung Yeon-wook served as panelists.
Secretary Lee Sung-kwon warned, "We were defeated," adding, "We must not offer self-congratulatory interpretations based on the number of metropolitan mayors or by-election winners."
Even the Seoul mayoral race, which the party won, drew the assessment that "it was possible because party leader Chang Dong-hyuk was absent." Kim said, "The 'distancing' between Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and leader Chang was the key to victory in the Seoul election." Woo pointed out, "We won the Daegu mayoral race by about 8 percentage points, but this should not be judged a victory."
Park Sung-min, head of Political Consulting Min, delivered a direct attack, saying, "The party leader and leadership have no sense of responsibility at all," adding, "They should know to take responsibility and step down if they lose."
