Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon clashed with President Lee Jae-myung on Wednesday, declaring that he "will push for impeachment if Lee drops the prosecution of his own case."
In a post on his Facebook page that day, Han said, "President Lee made clear at his press conference that he wants to drop the prosecution of his own case." He sharply criticized the president, saying, "(President Lee) spoke as if he would act 'according to law and common sense,' but there is nothing more inconsistent with law and common sense than Lee Jae-myung dropping the prosecution of Lee Jae-myung." He added, "That itself is a brazen, low-grade crime."
Earlier that day, President Lee was asked a related question at a press conference marking the first anniversary of his inauguration and said, "We just need to do it according to law and common sense. If something is wrong, it should be corrected, and if there is nothing wrong, it should be left alone."
Meanwhile, regarding the shortage of ballots during the June 3 local elections, Han said, "I will propose a bill to convert the National Election Commission chair into a standing position." He said, "The NEC chair is a non-standing position concurrently held by a Supreme Court justice. This is highly abnormal." He added, "It should be converted into a standing, accountable position, so that the organization and system can be inspected even during periods without elections, and the structure changed so that whoever is responsible answers directly to the public when problems arise."
