President Lee Jae-myung said Friday he would "humbly accept the will of our people reflected in the June 3 local elections and actively cooperate with the newly elected local governments regardless of their party affiliation."
Lee made the remarks while presiding over a meeting with senior secretaries at the presidential office, referring to the local elections held the previous day. "Regardless of how the competition unfolded during the election process, the ruling and opposition parties are partners who must represent all sovereign citizens, protect people's lives, and pioneer a better tomorrow for the nation," Lee said. "Now that the election is over, I ask our political circles to join forces in the substantial improvement of people's livelihoods, balanced regional development, and national unity that the sovereign people have commanded."
He also stressed, "I will pour all my efforts into advancing people's lives and developing the Republic of Korea by gathering the hearts of all citizens."
Marking the first anniversary of his inauguration, Lee said, "The second year of the people's sovereignty government's term has begun," adding, "All public officials should tie their shoelaces tightly once again and devote all their efforts to doubling the pace of state affairs." In particular, he noted, "We are in a situation where a vacuum in administrative leadership at local governments is feared due to the local elections," and urged, "From now, at the beginning of summer, we must preemptively and thoroughly inspect measures against summer disasters and safety accidents."
