Lee Jin-sook, the People Power Party candidate, is virtually certain to win the parliamentary by-election in Daegu's Dalseong County.
As of 10:50 p.m. Friday, with the vote count exceeding 44% in the Daegu Dalseong parliamentary by-election, Lee secured 63.8%, far ahead of Park Hyung-ryong of the Democratic Party of Korea, who recorded 36.2%. The gap between the two candidates has widened to nearly two-fold, raising Lee's chances of victory.
With her victory looking likely, Lee said, "I believe the residents' choice of me is a solemn order to restore the rule of law and common sense in a free Republic of Korea facing crisis, and to achieve greater leaps and development for Dalseong."
She added, "I will devote all my capabilities to creating sources of growth for the next 100 years and securing the systems and budgets needed to attract advanced technology firms and create quality jobs."
The by-election was held to fill the vacant National Assembly seat representing Daegu's Dalseong district. If Lee is officially elected, the People Power Party will retain its seat in Daegu Dalseong, a stronghold of conservative support.
