Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate, appealed for support on Monday night, the final day of official campaigning for the June 3 local elections, saying voters must "stop President Lee Jae-myung's reckless arrogance." Oh's eyes welled up as he mentioned encouragement from young supporters, prompting shouts of "Mayor, please don't cry" from the crowd.
At his finale rally held at Star Plaza near Sinchon Station, Oh said, "President Lee appears intent on neutralizing legislative, executive and even judicial powers, and now wants to seize local government as well." He added, "There are no elections next year, meaning we would have to wait two years until the general election. By then, both the rule of law and democracy will begin to crumble."
"My strength may be limited, but I will fight and win. I will set President Lee straight," Oh said. "Can Democratic Party candidate Jung Won-oh play this role?" He continued, "We cannot entrust Seoul to candidate Jung, who is underqualified and unprepared. Please protect Seoul."
Oh also criticized the government's real estate policy, saying, "Jeonse housing is nowhere to be found, and monthly rents are skyrocketing. Has there been any apology or reflection from the president on this? I will make him reflect, make him apologize to you, and force a change in housing policy. I will get it done."
"The ladder of social mobility has begun to be restored," Oh said. "Give me just four more years, and I will firmly rebuild the ladder of social mobility." He emphasized, "The meaning of this election is to turn Seoul, which has set the stage for a leap forward, into the world's third-leading city within four years, and to deliver, through your overwhelming support, the power to guide President Lee — who is heading down the wrong path — back onto the right course."
