The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs is forming an "integration advisory council" comprising both progressive and conservative elders to gather opinions on commemorative projects marking the 100th anniversary of the June 10 Independence Movement.
The ministry said Monday that it will hold the June 10 Movement Centennial Integration Advisory Council in Seoul, with Minister Kwon Oh-eul and more than 10 senior figures in attendance.
Participants in the advisory council include former National Assembly Speaker Lim Chae-jung, former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, Heritage of Korean Independence President Lee Jong-chan, former lawmaker Kim Eul-dong, novelist Yi Mun-yol, Gachon University President Lee Gil-ya, former Hansung University President Yoon Kyung-ro, and former Truth and Reconciliation Commission Chairman Ahn Byung-ook.
Representatives of Christianity, Cheondogyo, and Catholicism from the Council of Senior Korean Religious Leaders are also taking part, including Kim Young-ju, former general secretary of the National Council of Churches in Korea (NCCK); Park Nam-soo, former leader of Cheondogyo; and Archbishop Kim Hee-joong.
The participants will exchange views on the theme of national integration and social solidarity through patriotism, the ministry said.
The ministry described the June 10 Movement as "a history of solidarity in which all sectors of society came together, transcending differences in ideology, religion, and generation," adding that it will seek directions for social integration through the advisory council.
