Democratic Party leader Jung Cheong-rae criticized former President Park Geun-hye, who has been actively engaged in campaigning for the June 3 local elections, saying "an impeached president is going around without any sense of shame."
Jung made the remarks Tuesday at an on-site Central Election Strategy Committee meeting held at the campaign office of Oh In-hwan, a candidate for Nonsan mayor, in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province. "Watching the People Power Party deploy someone who lost the presidency in their election campaigning, I think this is exactly why they are called an 'insurrection-defending party' and a 'Yoon Again party,'" he said. "No matter how many years have passed, are they trying to reverse history and turn back the flow of the current?" he added. "I hope the people will deliver a stern judgment on this shameless and regressive behavior."
Following visits to Daegu and Daejeon during this campaign period, Park visited Gijang Market in Busan that day to support People Power Party candidates. She is conducting nationwide campaign support activities, with a visit to Gangwon Province scheduled for the 28th.
Jung also took aim at the People Power Party, saying, "They cannot wake up from the dream of insurrection and are showing such regressive behavior that one wonders whether their nominations are for insurrection or whether the insurrection is for nominations." He added, "The people will deliver a stern judgment with the same spirit that overcame the recent emergency martial law."
Jung also offered condolences to the victims of the previous day's Seosomun Overpass accident in Seodaemun, Seoul, and urged each candidate's campaign not to stir up controversy over the matter. "As soon as the accident occurred yesterday, I canceled my Andong campaign rally and went straight to the accident site to comfort the bereaved families and pray for the souls of the victims," he said. "Since the bereaved families are in a time of grief, I ask that you refrain from campaigning that would offend the public."
Jung also called for support for candidates in the South Chungcheong region. "Once the local elections are over, the budget allocation period will come. We will provide full support for necessary budgets and legislation," he said. "We will definitely repay the favor in a big way. Please be sure to vote for them." Park Soo-hyun, a candidate for South Chungcheong governor, and Oh In-hwan, a candidate for Nonsan mayor, attended the on-site Central Election Strategy Committee meeting that day.
