Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae on Wednesday criticized Shinsegae Chairman Chung Yong-jin's apology over the "Starbucks Tank Day marketing controversy," warning him to "keep in mind that this is not something that can be settled with a mere verbal apology."
In a Facebook post the same day, Jung said, "It leaves a bitter taste to see Chairman Chung Yong-jin's belated apology. Given his far-right remarks until now, I cannot shake the suspicion that this is a hypocritical apology aimed at weathering the storm." He added, "A genuine apology means accountability and action," noting that "for those who were hurt, it falls woefully short. He should make greater efforts."
Jung also urged, "Chairman Chung should bow his head more deeply in apology to the spirits of the May 18 victims, and take more sincere and accountable measures in response to the public anger over his apology."
Following Jung's Facebook post, Democratic Party chief spokesperson Kang Joon-hyun retracted his earlier remark that the apology "appeared to be sincere." On Facebook, Kang wrote, "I gave an inadequate response today. I sincerely apologize," explaining, "What I said today was not discussed with the party in advance. The remarks stemmed entirely from my personal judgment and expression."
Earlier in the day, Chairman Chung said at a public apology press conference, "It is my fault. All responsibility for this matter lies with me," adding, "I take very gravely the fact that many people felt deep pain and anger due to the inappropriate marketing."
