President Lee Jae-myung, approaching his first anniversary in office, will preside over a meeting of presidential advisory councils and committees on May 21. The session is designed as a work report to review achievements so far and address shortcomings. It marks the first time since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration that the president has convened advisory bodies and committees under direct presidential authority for such a meeting.
The presidential office said in a press release on May 20 that under the slogan "Drawing Korea's Future Together," the meeting will discuss the operational status and future plans of presidential advisory councils and committees carrying out key national tasks.
The gathering will bring together three presidential advisory councils — the National Unification Advisory Council, the National Economic Advisory Council, and the Presidential Advisory Council on Science and Technology — along with 16 committees under direct presidential authority, including the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee, the Future Defense Strategy Committee, the National Life and Safety Committee, the National Unity Committee, and the National Space Committee. Committees currently undergoing transfer or abolition were excluded. Ahead of his first anniversary in office next month, President Lee is using the session to review each committee's performance over the past year and recalibrate plans for the second year. He previously held work reports with government ministries and affiliated agencies late last year.
From the government, Interior and Safety Minister Yoon Ho-jung, who oversees the management and reorganization of government committees, will attend. From the presidential office, Chief of Staff Kang Hoon-sik, National Security Adviser Wi Sung-lac, Policy Chief Kim Yong-beom, and Senior Political Affairs Secretary Hong Ihk-pyo will also participate.
