Vice Defense Minister Lee Doo-hee visited the Army's 72nd Infantry Division on Wednesday to inspect a reservist mobilization training exercise utilizing advanced drones, the Ministry of National Defense said.
The exercise was conducted in a manner where reconnaissance drones piloted directly by reservists located simulated enemies and requested fire support, after which attack drones carried out strike missions.
"Reservists with professional capabilities honed in drone operations will become a core force of our military in modern warfare," Lee said. "We will ensure that soldiers who operated drones during their active duty service can be designated for mobilization with drone-linked units even as reservists, allowing for continuity in mission execution."
The Defense Ministry plans to select skilled drone technology experts from the civilian sector as standing reservists and operate reservist drone units even in peacetime.
The ministry also intends to conduct drone training across all reservist training units by 2030.
