President Lee Jae-myung on Tuesday appointed Lee Jong-wook, the current deputy commissioner of the Korea Customs Service, as the agency's new commissioner.
Lee Kyu-yeon, senior presidential secretary for public relations, announced the appointment at a briefing held at the Chunchugwan press hall. Describing the new commissioner as "a career bureaucrat who has held key posts at the Korea Customs Service, including planning and coordination officer," the senior secretary said, "He uncovered large-scale illegal transshipment exports and led joint operations with the Thai government to crack down on massive amounts of narcotics." He added, "He is the right person to provide stable support for Korean companies' trade and investment activities and to block customs practices that threaten public safety."
