The People Power Party on Wednesday named Yoon Yong-geun, chief attorney at law firm L-Plus, as its candidate for the by-election in the Gongju-Buyeo-Cheongyang constituency in South Chungcheong Province, a seat vacated after former Presidential Chief of Staff Chung Jin-suk withdrew his bid.
The party's Central Nomination Committee announced the decision after a two-day primary that began Tuesday, in which three applicants were evaluated through a combination of party member voting (50 percent) and a public opinion poll (50 percent).
Yoon defeated So Jung-im, deputy chair of the People Power Party's finance committee, and Yoon Min-ah, a former official at the Prime Minister's Office, to win the nomination.
A native of Buyeo, Yoon graduated from Jangam Elementary School, Jangam Middle School and Buyeo High School before earning a law degree from Chungnam National University. He passed the 48th bar examination and has practiced as a lawyer.
Until recently, he served as chair of the party's district chapter in Jungwon, Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, and was appointed media spokesperson under party leader Chang Dong-hyuk.
Yoon will face Kim Young-bin, a Gongju-born lawyer fielded as a strategic nominee by the Democratic Party of Korea, in the main race.
