The People Power Party (PPP) has proposed a 3-on-3 debate between the ruling and opposition parties over the ruling bloc's push for a "special counsel bill on fabricated investigations and indictments by the Yoon Suk Yeol administration."
Chung Jeom-sik, chair of the PPP's Policy Committee, said at a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, on Tuesday, "Let's immediately hold a 3-on-3 public debate on the prosecution withdrawal special counsel bill, with the floor leaders, policy committee chairs, and chief floor vice-leaders of both parties participating." The PPP refers to the fabricated indictment special counsel bill as the "prosecution withdrawal special counsel bill," arguing that it aims to withdraw the prosecution of President Lee Jae-myung.
"President Lee Jae-myung is even mobilizing extreme expressions such as 'fabricated indictment' and 'judicial killing' regarding his own trial," Chung said. "Public concern is reaching its peak as the president continues to make remarks that appear to deny prosecutorial investigations and judicial procedures themselves, driving his own trial and investigation into a political frame."
He continued, "The reality of the prosecution withdrawal special counsel bill that the Lee Jae-myung administration and the Democratic Party are pushing through now boils down to one thing," adding, "It is a system that serves as a tailored exoneration for President Lee Jae-myung."
Chung said, "We are proposing to openly verify before the public, as it is, whether this law is a Lee Jae-myung exoneration bill or not. If the Democratic Party is claiming that this bill is not a Lee Jae-myung exoneration bill, there is no reason to avoid a debate."
He added, "If you have nothing to hide, come forward before the public with confidence. We will wait for an immediate response from the Democratic Party."
