The People Power Party (PPP) announced Sunday that it will launch a task force (TF) to block the Democratic Party's special counsel bill on alleged fabricated investigations and indictments under the Yoon Suk-yeol government. The PPP argues that the special counsel bill is effectively legislation aimed at withdrawing the prosecution of cases involving President Lee Jae-myung.
"Once the Central Election Campaign Committee is launched, we will establish a 'Prosecution Withdrawal Response TF' as an internal body within the committee," Park Sung-hoon, chief spokesperson of the PPP, told reporters at the National Assembly on Sunday. "Beyond our traditional conservative base, it is important to clearly inform moderates and unaffiliated voters of how unjust the prosecution withdrawal special counsel bill is and how it tramples on the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea," Park said.
Regarding the timing of the Central Election Campaign Committee's launch, Park explained, "It is realistically difficult this weekend as party leader Jang Dong-hyuk is traveling around regions, so I will announce it sometime next week." The PPP will complete its nominations for metropolitan mayors and governors in the local elections and for by-elections with the selection of a candidate for the National Assembly by-election in Gongju-Buyeo-Cheongyang, South Chungcheong Province, on the 13th of this month. The campaign committee is expected to be launched in earnest thereafter.
