Prime Minister Kim Min-seok on Wednesday called for preventive measures against youth gambling, saying the problem has become increasingly serious.
"Youth gambling issues have been worsening recently," Kim said at a ceremony held at the Government Complex in Seoul to present appointment letters to civilian members of the National Gambling Control Commission.
Kim urged the civilian members to "devote all efforts to effective prevention and building a comprehensive safety net for the stable growth of young people, who are the future resources of our society."
"The commission must serve as a steadfast guardian to prevent our society from falling into the trap of gambling," he said. "Based on a sound gambling industry environment, the commission should also explore ways to contribute to citizens' leisure life, attract foreign tourists, create jobs and revitalize regional economies."
