The People Power Party has selected incumbent Andong Mayor Kwon Ki-chang as its candidate for Andong mayor and former Busan Administrative Vice Mayor Ahn Byung-yoon as its candidate for Yecheon county head in North Gyeongsang Province, ahead of the June 3 local elections.
The People Power Party's central Nomination Management Committee announced Wednesday that the decisions were made following an internal primary held over two days, on the 7th and 8th, combining a party member vote (50%) and a public opinion poll (50%) to select the candidates for Andong mayor and Yecheon county head.
In the primary for Andong mayor, Kwon defeated preliminary candidates Kwon Kwang-taek and Kim Eui-seung. In the Yecheon county head primary, Ahn beat preliminary candidate Do Ki-wook to secure the nomination. The North Gyeongsang provincial party's nomination committee had initially planned to wrap up the nomination process earlier this month, but referred the matter to the central party after failing to reach a conclusion at the provincial level.
