Democratic Party of Korea leader Jung Chung-rae said Tuesday that the special counsel probe into the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's alleged fabricated investigations and indictments is "a process of judicial normalization that corrects the wrongs of the Yoon Suk-yeol prosecutorial dictatorship." The remarks are seen as an effort to underscore the legitimacy of the special counsel amid internal calls within the party for a more measured pace.
Jung made the comments during a supreme council meeting held at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center. "We must correct the reckless misdeeds of the Yoon Suk-yeol prosecutorial dictatorship," he said. "Through this parliamentary investigation, the ugly circumstances of the fabricated investigations carried out by the Yoon Suk-yeol prosecutorial dictatorship to eliminate political rivals have been laid bare one by one," he said. "The illegal acts committed by the prosecution to fabricate non-existent crimes targeting President Lee Jae-myung—including selective evidence collection and fabrication, sentence bargaining, and coercion of testimony—are too numerous to list."
"Not only President Lee, but countless others including attorney Nam Wook and former Gyeonggi Province Vice Governor for Peace Lee Hwa-young have had their lives torn apart by the prosecution's fabricated investigations," he added. "We can no longer stand idly by as the truth is distorted by political prosecutors and innocent victims are mass-produced." Jung also stated, "As Article 11 of the Constitution makes clear, all citizens are equal before the law," adding, "The same applies to the remedy of harm."
"Turning away from legitimate remedy for harm simply because someone is the president runs counter to the spirit of the Constitution," he stressed. "If there has been unjust harm from fabricated indictments, anyone at all must be able to seek the unvarnished truth and receive just compensation."
