President Lee Jae-myung on Tuesday urged the ruling party pushing the "fabricated indictment special counsel bill" to "determine the specific timing and procedures through a process of gathering public opinion and deliberation."
Hong Ihk-pyo, senior presidential secretary for political affairs, announced the message in a briefing at the Chunchugwan press center. "Through the parliamentary investigation to uncover the truth behind the political prosecution's fabricated indictment allegations, a significant portion of the illegal acts and unjust investigations committed by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration and political prosecutors at the time have been revealed," Hong said. "A national consensus has also been formed on the need for a special counsel to rectify this."
"Establishing the truth and restoring judicial justice through a special counsel is something that must be done," Hong added, while directing the Democratic Party to first gather public opinion regarding specific procedures and timing. President Lee's directive is interpreted as taking into account opposition backlash against the fabricated indictment special counsel recently pushed by the Democratic Party.
Regarding the possibility of passing the special counsel bill in a plenary session before the June 3 local elections, Democratic Party Secretary General Cho Seung-rae earlier explained, "Of course we are thinking along those lines, but there are various circumstances that need to be taken into consideration."
