The Prime Minister's Office said Monday that it has appointed Kwon Hye-rin, general planning policy officer at the Office for Government Policy Coordination, as head of the working-level task force for the national territorial transformation policy.
Kwon has served consecutive terms as general administrative policy officer, general regulatory policy officer and general planning policy officer at the Office for Government Policy Coordination, and was promoted to the senior civil servant Grade-A rank in this personnel reshuffle. With the appointment of the task force head, the national territorial transformation working group has now been largely formed and will begin full-fledged operations.
The working group led by Kwon will oversee the national spatial transformation project, which aims to establish a regionally balanced nation. The Office for Government Policy Coordination has previously convened the pan-government consultative council for national spatial transformation on multiple occasions, discussing the development of the "5 Hubs-3 Special Zones" growth engines for region-led growth, the introduction of mega special zones, the cultivation of regional talent, a preferential system for provincial areas, and the development of balanced growth bases.
At the second pan-government consultative council for national spatial transformation held on the first of last month, Prime Minister Kim Min-seok stressed, "Region-led growth is the very starting point that will transform regions into drivers of economic growth and central axes of industry, allowing the Republic of Korea to be reborn and leap forward as a truly regionally balanced nation." He added, "We will do our utmost across all ministries while communicating closely with local governments and businesses."
