South Korea will restore the unification security attaché post at its embassy in Russia, which was abolished in February last year, with a new official set to be dispatched in August.
"The unification security attaché post in Russia, which was abolished in line with the government's 2022 policy, will be restored following the repeal of the guideline in November last year," a Ministry of Unification official said Tuesday. "We plan to dispatch an official through an open recruitment process in August this year."
The government had previously eliminated the unification security attaché post in Russia under the 2022 operational guidelines for the "Pan-Government Integrated Utilization Quota System." As a result, no new appointment was made after the last attaché returned to Korea in February last year. However, with the repeal of the guideline in November, the Ministry of Unification gained the legal basis to dispatch a new attaché.
The ministry is known to have continuously called for the restoration of the post since the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration. "As ties between North Korea and Russia are deepening, the unification security attaché will carry out tasks such as monitoring developments," the ministry official said.
