Chun Jun-ho, acting floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, said Thursday that "the crimes of the political prosecution revealed through the parliamentary inquiry must be uncovered through a special counsel investigation," adding that "the Democratic Party will swiftly propose a special counsel bill on fabricated indictments."
Chun made the remarks at a policy coordination meeting on the day the National Assembly's "Special Committee on the Parliamentary Inquiry into Alleged Fabricated Indictments by the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration's Political Prosecution," led by the Democratic Party, concluded its activities.
"The structure of the fabricated indictment cases that Yoon Suk-yeol carried out by mobilizing all power agencies is identical," he said. "Whenever Yoon set a target, the political prosecution and the Board of Audit and Inspection moved in tandem." He added, "They carried out fabricated indictments through coercive investigations, manipulated testimonies, and unimaginable excessive audits. They did not hesitate to fabricate transcripts, forge official documents, or even violate human rights."
Regarding the People Power Party's decision to oppose constitutional amendment as a party line, Chun said, "They are being obstinate about matters that have already reached social consensus." He urged, "Immediately scrap the party line opposing constitutional amendment. I call on People Power Party lawmakers to join the historic task of constitutional amendment according to their conscience and convictions."
The National Assembly's Special Committee on the Parliamentary Inquiry into Alleged Fabricated Indictments by the Yoon Suk-yeol Administration's Political Prosecution is scheduled to hold a plenary session on Thursday afternoon to adopt its final report and conclude its activities with measures including filing complaints against witnesses accused of perjury.
Meanwhile, lawmakers on the special committee denied reports that the special counsel would be granted "prosecution withdrawal authority." Democratic Party Rep. Jeon Yong-gi said on MBC's "Focus on the Frontlines" on Thursday, "What was actually discussed in the parliamentary inquiry was ultimately a special counsel to uncover fabricated indictments, so prosecution withdrawal cannot be directly included. The prosecution withdrawal portion is not under review."
Rep. Park Sung-jun, secretary of the special committee, also said on the YouTube show "Kim Ou-joon's Humility Is Hard News Factory" regarding the draft of the special counsel bill, "It is not a finished product and needs to be verified." Committee members plan to hold a briefing Thursday morning to explain the draft special counsel bill to avoid any misunderstandings.
