The camp of Jung Won-oh, the Democratic Party of Korea's candidate for Seoul mayor, on Tuesday blasted rival Oh Se-hoon's push to form a "Jung Won-oh Corruption Investigation Committee," saying, "They are creating a dedicated negative campaigning unit because defeat looms large."
"Mayor Oh may be in a frustrating position where he has to dig up dirt on his opponent, but Candidate Jung can confirm the problems with Mayor Oh just by asking a few questions to citizens on the street," Jung's camp said in a commentary, referring to Oh, the People Power Party candidate.
"Jung Won-oh cannot be countered with dirty negative campaigning," the camp added. "While Mayor Oh devotes himself to behind-the-scenes investigations alongside those who filed complaints with the ethics committee, Candidate Jung will join citizens in passing judgment on Oh Se-hoon's decade of misgovernance."
Jung's camp also retorted, "Since they are forming a negative campaign committee anyway, how about also launching a 'Lies Committee,' a 'Flip-Flopping Committee,' and an 'Irrelevant Answers Committee,' which they usually excel at?"
According to media reports, Oh's side is reviewing plans to form an election camp soon and operate an investigation committee to scrutinize various allegations surrounding Jung. Rep. Kim Jae-sub of the People Power Party, who has raised multiple allegations related to Jung, is reportedly being tapped as the committee chair.
