The hottest topic in the artificial intelligence industry recently is undoubtedly "agentic AI." Beyond AI that simply follows human instructions or generates text in response, an era has dawned where AI understands goals on its own, interacts with external systems, and acts autonomously. Agentic AI is performing the role of an active digital colleague that judges, executes, and continuously learns on its own, transcending its function as a mere tool.
The positive effects that agentic AI will bring lie in overwhelming productivity gains and infinite service scalability. This new AI possesses planning capabilities and control abilities to handle external tools, allowing it to flexibly connect with various application programming interfaces (APIs), applications, and databases. Agentic AI, which autonomously combines with various services to expand work methods, is creating tremendous innovation and opening new markets—completing projects that previously took years in just tens of days.
Additionally, the recently emerging concept of agentic AI commerce is shaking up the consumer market landscape. In distribution and commerce, AI agents autonomously check inventory in real-time, understand consumer intent and context, and independently handle the entire process from optimal personalized recommendations to automatic ordering. Consumers experience hyper-personalized consumption beyond simple chatbot conversations, as if they have a dedicated personal assistant. This deeply impacts consumers' daily lives and the overall market ecosystem.
Agentic AI is even changing the paradigm of labor. Previously, there was great fear that AI would replace human "jobs," but the agentic AI era is instead creating countless "tasks" as a new form of entrepreneurship. By autonomously handling repetitive and complex business processes, agentic AI allows humans to focus on more creative and strategic goal-setting. This means that solo entrepreneurs or small organizations can create high business value without large-scale capital. There is a tremendous advantage in that all citizens can dramatically increase their potential and value using agentic AI.
Where light is bright, shadows are deep. As autonomy increases, the problems and responsibility issues that agentic AI may bring have emerged as critical challenges. There is an ever-present risk that self-judging agentic AI could generate false information due to hallucinations or perform unauthorized operations with excessively delegated authority, potentially leaking sensitive personal information. If AI's autonomous decisions cause financial losses or discriminatory bias, who should be held responsible?
For agentic AI to successfully take root in our society, establishing governance with clear accountability mechanisms is urgent, along with designing "control rights" that allow humans to supervise AI operations and intervene when necessary. The success or failure of the agentic AI era depends on how responsibly and wisely we handle this powerful and autonomous technology.
For all citizens to maximize their value using agentic AI, expanding AI literacy—the ability to critically understand its operating principles, limitations, and ethical risks—is essential, beyond simply enjoying the benefits of technology. When AI literacy for all citizens is supported by transparent and responsible governance, technology will finally become "AI for everyone" in the truest sense, rather than the exclusive domain of a few experts. This will be the most brilliant feature and advantage that agentic AI will bring to our society going forward.
