The South Korean government on Thursday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, saying it "provides a turning point for the resumption of transit through the Strait of Hormuz."
The government issued the statement through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, adding that it "highly appreciates the mediation efforts by relevant countries including Pakistan in this process."
"We hope that negotiations between the two sides will be concluded and that peace and stability in the Middle East will be restored as soon as possible," the government said. It added, "We hope that free navigation for all vessels, including ours, through the Strait of Hormuz will be carried out swiftly and safely, and we plan to continue communication and consultations with relevant countries to this end."
The United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on Wednesday. Both sides agreed to terms under which Iran would open the Strait of Hormuz and the United States would halt attacks against Iran.
