Han Byeong-do, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, on Wednesday described the suspension of prosecutor Park Sang-yong by Justice Minister Jeong Seong-ho as "justice prevailing."
Park had been handling the investigation into the Ssangbangwool Group's alleged illegal remittances to North Korea.
"Prosecutor Park showed a brazen attitude with no remorse, despite revelations of a salmon party, inducing false testimony, and indications of sentence bargaining," Han said at a party policy meeting held at the National Assembly.
Regarding Park's refusal to take an oath as a witness at the parliamentary investigation into "allegations of politically motivated fabricated indictments by the Yoon Suk-yeol administration's politicized prosecution," Han criticized that "he blatantly revealed the true face of an arrogant and overbearing politicized prosecution."
"Prosecutor Park has lost reason and is engaging in political acts," Han said. "The People Power Party says it will invite this very prosecutor Park and hold a separate hearing. How long will they continue to shield the politicized prosecution?"
Han also stressed that "the Democratic Party will immediately introduce a special counsel after the parliamentary investigation to uncover every last detail of the fabricated indictment allegations without leaving a speck of dust."
Regarding the second comprehensive special counsel team's announcement that it had detected signs that the presidential office under the Yoon Suk-yeol government attempted to intervene in the prosecution's investigation into the Ssangbangwool North Korea remittance case, Han called it "an unprecedented, massive abuse of state power mobilizing all government resources."
On the ruling-opposition-government consultative meeting on the people's livelihood economy scheduled for the same day between President Lee Jae-myung and leaders of the ruling and opposition parties, Han said, "Bipartisan cooperation is more urgent than ever to overcome the Middle East crisis and stabilize people's livelihoods." He added, "The most important thing is the swift passage of the 26 trillion won war supplementary budget."
