Min Hyung-bae and Kim Young-rok, preliminary candidates of the Democratic Party of Korea, will face each other in a runoff vote for the party's nomination for Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City mayor in the June 3 local elections.
Hong Gi-won, vice chairman of the Democratic Party's central election management committee, announced at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, on Thursday that "Candidate Min and Candidate Kim have been selected as the two runoff candidates for the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City mayor nomination." The runoff vote is scheduled to take place from June 12 to 14.
"The top vote-getter in this primary did not reach a majority," Hong explained. "Accordingly, a runoff vote will be held between the two candidates who received the most votes." The ranking and vote share of each candidate were not disclosed in accordance with party rules.
The Democratic Party conducted the primary from June 3 through Thursday for the three preliminary candidates for Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City mayor, using a method that combines 50% party member voting and 50% public opinion polling. Shin Jeong-hun, who competed against Min and Kim, did not advance to the runoff.
